Forensic Science Positions for Nurses

More and more opportunities are becoming available in the forensic field for nurses. In this course, you will learn the fundamental knowledge, skills, and investigative techniques to get started in this exciting field and enter into an introductory position. There are eight practice areas. Each practice area contains job opportunities as an employee and as an independent contractor. Nurse entrepreneurs can develop consulting areas specific to their local area’s needs.

Interpersonal Violence

The RN practice area of interpersonal violence includes domestic violence, sexual assault, sexual assault primary prevention, sexual assault in tribal communities, child abuse and neglect, and elder mistreatment. Job positions are with healthcare facilities; governmental agencies that implement and oversee the state and federal rules and regulations; and family and children federal, state, and local services. Nurses in emergency departments and freestanding rape crises centers collect evidence from victims of interpersonal violence and rape and testify on the collection of both physical and verbal evidence. Nurses specializing in collecting evidence in sexual assault require additional training (40 hours didactic and some practical experience in most states). Job opportunities exist as both employee and an independent contractor job status. Nurse entrepreneurs can develop consulting areas specific to their local area’s needs.

Forensic Mental Health

The RN practice area of forensic mental health deals with diagnosis and treatment of perpetrators pre-trial and during trial. A practitioner manages the mental health of the perpetrator, such as addictions, psychiatric disorders, and physical treatment needed during this time. An advance practice license is required. Job positions are with local, state, and federal correctional facilities. Opportunities include both employee and independent contractor. Nurse entrepreneurs can develop consulting areas specific to their local area’s needs.

Correctional Nursing

The RN practice area of correctional nursing manages the nursing needs of a perpetrator after trial during imprisonment. Job positions include both registered nurses and advanced practice nurses. Job status can be either employee or independent contractor. Nurses make up approximately 11% of the personnel in any given jail. The correctional system must provide for the medical care of their prisoners from onset to death including emergency, intensive care, and all other services available to the general public. Nurses in this practice area often report that they are extremely satisfied with their practice. Nurse entrepreneurs can develop consulting areas specific to their local area’s needs.

Legal Nurse Consulting

The RN practice area of legal nurse consulting consists of reviewing a medical record and determining the merit of a legal case. Standards-of-care and healthcare guidelines are determined and applied to the patient’s care to determine adherence to these standards. Positions include both employee and independent contractor status with law firms, both defense and plaintiff.

Emergency/Trauma Services

The RN practice area of emergency and trauma consists of collecting evidence from a victim in the emergency and trauma department of a healthcare facility. A nurse collects evidence for law enforcement and is able to testify in court regarding the collection techniques. Positions are mostly employee status with the exception of sexual assault nurses.  Nurse entrepreneurs can develop consulting areas specific to their local area’s needs.

Public Health and Safety

The RN practice area of public health and safety addresses biological and environmental threats to the health and safety of the community, such as issues of trauma, communicable disease, and death. Positions are both employee and independent contractor status with non-profit corporations and local and federal governmental agencies, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Nurse entrepreneurs can develop consulting areas specific to their local area’s needs.

Death Investigation

The RN practice area of death investigation includes serving as the officiator of death in numerous areas in the U.S.  Positions exist as an elected coroner (an independent position) or medical investigator under the direction of a forensic pathologist. Titles vary from one area to the next. Positions include both employee and independent contractor status. Nurse entrepreneurs can develop consulting areas specific to their local area’s needs.

Mass Disaster

Historically, the forensic nurses have been involved on the front lines of disasters as early as the days of Florence Nightingale, providing a clinical resource in the times of emergent need. To keep from living in fear, societies prepare to respond to threats in a proactive manner. Positions include volunteer, employee, and independent contractor status. Nurse entrepreneurs can develop consulting areas specific to their local area’s needs.
